For each value of y greater than 2*3^(1/2), the function f(x) is such that the equation f(x) = y has the form x = (y^2 + 12)/y.

I don't understand well that sentence. Could someone please explain what it is trying to say? It would be ideal if you provide an example. Thanks!

Yikes! Where did you find this? How about posting the entire question?

Although you haven't provided the entire question, I have a feeling that, somewhere along the line, the question requires you to find the inverse of a somewhat convoluted function.
If so, then it's safe to say that the question is beyond the scope of the GMAT. So, skip it and move on (otherwise post the entire question).
