Please help me!!!

by sivsrinivas » Thu Sep 23, 2010 2:26 pm
Hello Everyone!

I recently sat for my GMAT and I scored very low marks and I realized I did not approach the GMAT in a right manner. I studied only one book which is KAPLAN. Nothing else. I ignored OG etc. I am able to understand the seriousness of GMAT now.

I need some advise from the experts. PLEASE advise me!

I want someone to tell me exactly where to start , how to start, study plans, etc. I have no clue and I do not have any friends who could advise me. I think that I need some advise from the experts.

Please help me. I need to get an admission in MAY or SEPTEMBER in 2011, at any cost! Please advise me.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks
Sri

I think your first mistake may have been to ignore the OG! OG is essential - its written by the test makers and contains actual retired GMAT questions.

If you are overwhelmed with self-studying, take a course. I am taking the Knewton course - it keeps you on track with scheduling and comparitively speaking, it was a lot cheaper than the other class alternatives. They give you homework and adapt subsequent assignments to your weaknesses.

Generally, after a Knewton class, I work through the Knewton homework and then hit the OG! This will help you solidify fundamentals and question types.

Best of Luck!

Well you have already done the hard part. The hardest part is falling, not getting back up! So now you are ready to devote the time and energy needed to the studying.

I see that a couple of people mentioned taking a class. Classes are best for some people and self study works for some people. Here is the link to a discussion of taking a class versus not taking a class.

https://www.beatthegmat.com/need-expert- ... tml#294726

If you decide to self study, figure out who you trust for the lesson books and, as the others have mentioned, make sure to get the Official Guide! Get at least one lesson book for each question type (sentence correction, critical reasoning, reading comprehension, data sufficiency and problem solving) and don't be afraid to mix and match from different companies.

As to study plans, you can search the postings for the various study plans that have been on Beat the GMAT and if you find that you have any specific questions you can post them here and we will all try to help.

Remember, it does not have to be just you and one single book against the GMAT - you are not in this alone!

Hi David, outreach and others
Thank you so much for your kind reply. I truly appreciate it. I recently ordered OG 12th edition, MGMAT full set, OG verbal and Quant Review and I already have kaplan 2011. I am planning to buy Veritas as well.
David , please tell me how to start. I was told to not to start with OG first and exhaust it until I finish OG reviews and MGMAT.
What is the right methodology for studying for GMAT?

Please send me an updated error log and study plan ,, please!!!

I am in the same boat as you are. I have not scored great in the first CAT I took from the GMATprep software. I have to finish the exam before second week of Nov and then apply like crazy before the Rd2 deadlines.

I have enrolled in MGMAT online course and am really seeing an improvement. I also subscribed to Grockit and the beatthegmat practice questions, so that I can practice a lot. The concepts should become second nature to you.

Personally I recommend MGMAT if you are aiming for 700+. VeritasPrep classes are okay, but I had a terrible experience with their sales/customer service and I would never go back to that company. But it would be your personal preference.

Good luck.

Thank you Jap
Are you Sure Manhattan GMAT is better than Kaplan. Some of my friends told me that Kaplan online courses are better than Manhattan. I need your opinion. Kaplan lets you to take the program over and again until you are satisfied but manhattan only once. Are you seriously seeing an improvement with help of Manhattan online courses. I have already purchased all the books from Manhattan. Please advise me buddy.
Thanks
Sri

If you really master the concepts you don't need to take the course over and over again as there wouldn't be anything new to learn. You'd just have to practice a lot to push your score higher. i studied the kaplan premier religiously for few weeks and it did not work for me. But I have not taken their classes nor seen their curriculum, so I cannot speak for them.

But as far as MGMAT vs. Veritas:

- MGMAT assigns OG problems for homework, it expects you to finish the strategy guides before the class and they discuss deeper, so the concepts sink in well. You can download their curriculum to get a sense of what their schedule is.
- Veritas Prep teaching style is a bit different in the sense, they go through the guides in the class. I am sure, they have the curriculum as well.

Honestly they both are good. It just is a matter of personal preference. But, MGMAT guides are hands down the best out there.

By the way, one more tip. Don't waste too much time researching which one to take, especially if you up against deadlines. Pick one and go with it.

I don't think this is a solid advice. The fact that you're short on time makes it more important to pick the right class.
Yep.
