1000 sentence correction ....puzzled

by resilient » Thu Jan 24, 2008 7:25 am
3. A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770’s, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.
(A) it was only the second published by an American woman
(B) it was only the second that an American woman published
(C) the second one only published by an American woman
(D) the second one only that an American woman published
(E) only the second published by an American woman

why not C? I cant see what is being tested- what to do?

(C) is incorrect because of the placement of the word "only". By moving only around, we change the meaning of the sentence, a big no-no in sentence correction.

Only choice (E) has "only" in the right place and is parallel to the first part of the list ("the first book by.. and only the second published by...").

Hello Stuart,

I am running into this problem a lot. Almost all my wrong answer choices are because of this pesky error on meaning. How do I deal with it and what can i read (learning material) to fix this problem. I already took the kaplan course but seem to have missed this one issue. Please help!
