Questions on ranges

by dvalenz » Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:43 pm
In May, Xiang sold 15 used cars , the range of the selling prices was 15000, and the lowest selling price was 4,500. In June , Xiang sold 10 cars . For these the range of the selling price was 16,500 and the lowest selling price was 6,100. What was the range of the selling prices of the 25 used cars sold by Xiang in May and in June.

Please help. I have no idea how to go about this question.

Thanks!

The range of the selling prices in May was $15,000 and the lowest selling price was $4,500, so the highest price in May = 15000 + 4500 = $19,500
The range of the selling prices in June was $16,500 and the lowest selling price was $6,100, so the highest price in June = 16500 + 6100 = $22,600

The lowest price of a car in May-June was $4,500 and highest price of a car in May-June was $22,600, so range for May-June = 22,600 - 4,500 =
$18,100
.

Range of a dataset is given as Highest value - Lowest value.
In the question, we have to find out the lowest & the highest car price and then take their absolute difference.

In May, Lowest priced car is 4500, & highest car priced would be 15000+4500=19500.
Similarly, in June, Lowest priced car is 6100, & highest car priced would be 16500+6100=22600.

So for 2 months collectively- The Lowest priced car is 4500, & highest car priced is 22600.
So the range is 22600-4500=18100/-.
