740 (Q 42, V 51)

I've been reading through this forum and I feel like I'm a bit of an oddity for having done much better on the verbal than the quantitative. I'm very happy with my score but I have to wonder if schools will be concerned that my quantitative skills aren't strong enough, especially since I plan to concentrate in finance. I feel like I could improve my quantitative score if I took it again but I don't know if its worth retaking when a 740 is a great score and I have the LSAT to prepare for. I'm currently an undergrad senior with a 3.75 GPA pursuing a joint MBA/JD. Opinions?

Probably NOT to retake.
What makes me surprise is that you only received 740 with such impressive scores in each section. I thought this should be around 750!

Congratulations! That is awesome, and I'm glad we finally see somebody with a high V relative to their Q lol.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm an undergrad junior who was looking to do law school, and decided that a JD/MBA would be nice, so now I've taken up the gmat.

Don't retake. Your score is well good enough right now, and your GPA is great too.

Can you share the secrets such as books or material you used, practise methods you followed, and strategy you developed in getting very high verbal score.

Congratulations!

If you have intentions of studying finance at a top b-school (H/W/S), then my guess is that a 42 in quant is not going to cut it UNLESS you have a bunch of high-level quant courses with excellent grades i.e. A's in multivariate calculus, linear algebra etc. So while re-taking with a 740 is madness... and might look bad to adcoms, I think this is one situation you can easily explain, and, in fact, one that, in my opinion, would be self evident -- i retook because I felt my quant score was not strong enough given my ambitions. Of course, it is only worth retaking if you can improve your quant.

Thanks for all the congrats!
My top school choices are Duke and the University of Virginia. They're top 12th and 15th in the US but not quite Harvard or Wharton. I do have A's in statistics 1 & 2, business calculus, and all of my finance and accounting courses. Do you think that will make up for my quant score?

I think so. But there is no harm in calling them up and finding out.

your score is fine. No need to retake. Any AdCom that chooses to ding you because of a 42 on Quant is crazy. Especially if you essays and experience (work, school & community) is stellar.

Good luck with your applications. Don't let anyone second guess your GMAT. Congratulations!!
