The best answer is E. The best answer here must qualify the statement made in the
main clause, the diet of the bear is largely vegetarian: it cannot be treated as part of
the list of vegetarian foods. In other words, the best answer must logically and
grammatically attach to the main clause when the list is omitted

What is the source of this question? I feel there is something wrong with it.

Despite being a carnivore - is a modifier that should modify Bear.
Instead, its modifying diet of bear.

Am I missing something?

The source has turned a good question into a horrible one. The original question is in the link provided by selango. This source has made a mess of it.

Despite being a carnivore cannot modify the diet of the bear. I would suggest that you better stay away from this source.
