Based on accounts of various ancient writers, scholars have painted a sketchy picture of the activities of an all-female cult that, perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., worshipped a goddess known in Latin as Bona Dea, "the good goddess."

(A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers
(B) Basing it on various ancient writers' accounts
(C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis
(D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used
(E) Using accounts of various ancient writers

When I loooked at this one, I felt all of them have problem. Can someone help with this?

You can eliminate B,C and E as these sentences are awkward.

Bw option A and E,Option E seems logically correct.

This question is in form of Phrase on one side and main sentence on the other

An ing verb form (Use basing or using) must be intoduced in the phrase to refer correctly to the subject of the main sentence ie scholars
However basing in option B has it so u can eliminate the ans choice bcas it doesnt refer to anything
hence E is the best option

Remember one thing that 'Based on accounts of various ancient writers' is a modifier and modifies noun which comes immediate after comma. Here A has a problem with intended meaning. It sounds like 'Scholars are based on accounts', and it is very serious mistake.

Same problem is with B and D. C is wrong because sentence started with word 'with'. Therefore, only remaining is E and it is right.
