Question regarding school ranking!

by rezje » Fri Sep 04, 2009 1:16 pm
Hello,

I am a recent college graduate from New Mexico State University. I double majored in finance and accounting, and graduated with honors with a 3.59 GPA. I was very active during college in activities such as student government, Model UN, etc. I would love to go in a few years to a top 10 business school program (hopefully Chicago). My only concern is that I graduated from a tier 4 university according to US News and World Report, and was wondering if this affects my chances of admission to a top 10 business school. I am currently studying for the GMAT and I hope to get above a 700. Any comments on this? Thanks!

Dear rezje,

You are not seen as less than because your undergraduate institution is ranked as a tier IV by US News. The difficulty of your major and the rigor of your school will be part of your evaluation, so your high GPA at NMSU in a quantitative major will work to your advantage in this regard. If you also score 700+ on the GMAT, then there is no reason for you not to apply to any school you feel is a good match. Your work experience, essays, recommendations and interview will also play a significant role in your admissions decision, so you will have a chance to shine and make a case for offering you a seat.

Best of luck,
Lisa
