CR - French Cuisine

by harsh.champ » Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:11 pm
French cuisine is highly regarded all over the world. Yet in Paris there are more American restaurants selling burgers and fries (which many people now class as 'junk food') than there are in any other European capital city. Obviously the French are very fond of 'junk food', and are not too proud to eat it.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the author's contention?

A. There are also a larger number of Lebanese restaurants in Paris than there are in other European capital cities
B. French Cordon Bleu cuisine is very expensive
C. The number of French tourists eating in New York burger restaurants is very low
D. Junk food is actually has high nutritional value when eaten in moderation
E. There are an unusually large number of American tourists in Paris who eat at burger joints
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

IMO E
The fast food joints cater to the the large American Tourist. The French stays away from it.
In C a particular restaurant in named, not food joints in general. The particular joint is not popular among the French
In A Lebanese foods is popular, but it may be inclusive of fast food or there may be a lot of Lebanese expats or tourists. Nothing to negate the French love for fast food.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the author's contention?

A. There are also a larger number of Lebanese restaurants in Paris than there are in other European capital cities
Incorrect : The number of 'LEBANESE' restaurants in Paris is irrelevant here.

B. French Cordon Bleu cuisine is very expensive
Incorrect : This does not help to undermine the author's contention that French are very fond of junk food.

C. The number of French tourists eating in New York burger restaurants is very low
Incorrect : Issue is about PARIS n AMERICAN restaurants in Paris..... It is not about AMERICA n FRENCH TOURISTS. Eliminated.

D. Junk food is actually has high nutritional value when eaten in moderation
Incorrect : Amount of junk food to be eaten is irrelevant here.

E. There are an unusually large number of American tourists in Paris who eat at burger joints
Correct : Just because there are large number of junk food AMERICAN restaurants in PARIS, the author ASSUMES that only FRENCH ppl eat junk food. This argument weakens the author's contention by stating that amercican junk food restaurants in paris caters to unusually large number of american tourists and not french ppl.

My pick is E.
A- Extra info but Irrelevant.
B - Extra info but Irrelevant.
C - A contender - Attacks the argument, but lets see other options.
D - Extra info but still Irrelevant.
E - Extra info Kills the argument completely.

Definitely E in this scenario. It gives an alternate reason of why there's a large amount of American restaurants in Paris.

When attacking answer choices, always try to stay as close to the argument as possible. Although weaken questions will produce answer choices that bring in outside information, the correct answer will not have awkwardly irrelevant information (i.e. Lebanese, Cordon Bleu, New York, or moderation).
