Author Tone

by yourshail123 » Wed Oct 17, 2012 10:56 am
Just wondering whether anyone has collected a list of words or phrases which reflects author's tone - just patterns which usually come up on GMAT.

Such as -
authoritative chastisement
dispassionate analysis
unwarranted condescension
incensed trepidation
righteous indignation

Or there will be a whole lot of such?

Hi,

Rather than rote memorization of a collection of such dispositions, I would advise trying to guess this as you read the passage. Make it a habit to estimate this disposition for every RC you do and slowly it becomes a habit. Questions such as:

1) Gist of the passage
2) Which of the following would be the last line of the passage
3) Tone of the passage

Can all be very well understood while you read the passage and can be answered very quickly afterwords.

Yes ivyctor!! That is essentially the way to approach. However, what I was looking for is whether we have a certain set of patterns of author's tone, as we have certain set of passages categorized into Business, Social Science, Natural Science and Humanities.
Just trying to figure the scope of author's way of reasoning. As I guess, it would be too much broad. :)
