Learning Mathematics

by Siddhartha Bhagat » Sun Jun 19, 2011 8:52 pm
Dear Friends,

I am writing this out of desperation as I want to give my GMAT examination by this November or December, but I am really weak at maths, can you please guide me through to understand it, by letting me know name of some books which might help me out in terms of understanding.

I am working on my maths but even after understanding the concept of the theory, I am not able to apply it correctly.

Please help me, by letting me know, as in what steps should I take to enhance and go to an advance stage.

thanks&regards

(If found any grammatical mistake, you all are welcome to note it, and mention it in the reply for which I will be waiting for as it will help me only to have a correct grammatical sense.

Hi,

Though you have mentioned you think you are weak in Quant, you have not told us why you feel so. Have you taken a full-length GMATprep test? If so what was your score (esp in Quant)? What areas did you find difficult? Please do this level of analysis ASAP. Nov-Dec is way too much time - you might perhaps not need so much effort.

If you want to start with basics I can suggest either (a) Jeff Sackman's GMAT Math Bible (b) Manhattan GMAT Quant Strategy guides. After the analysis you can pick either.

Let us know how it works,

Thanx for the consideration and concern shown. No, I have not taken the GMAT test prep as I know before hand that it won't even reach 50%. Buddy, Quant is my major problem and I m working diligently on it. Anyways, thank you for taking out time and suggesting books for my guidance, really appreciate it.

Q1) buT is R.S. Aggarwall is another one of the best options for strengthening my base in maths?
Q2) Does these books you mentioned say for a beginner are more than enough?
Q3)Do you really think Nov-Dec, is way too long period for me to understand the concpts of maths and act accordingly on application of the concepts?

Thanx

Look buddy, it really takes less than 10 days to really recollect all you learnt in school and high school!
Nov-Dec is way too much time, if you got the whole day to study, but yeah, if you're working then you got no minute to waste!
To start with, OG(Official Guide)(Very Very Important) is the book you will need to practice from and reading what all you have to cover. Manhattan(The whole Set) is a good novice's book, covers almost everything. Look no further brother,Go For It!

1. R.S.Agarwal is a crappy book for GMAT. Don't touch it with a ten foot barge pole!

2. Yes the books mentioned ARE meant for beginners. As a matter of fact - you could use ANY standard GMAT quant prep book.

3. I think 1 month is good for you to brush up the basics + practice.
