Q50 or Q51

by vikram4689 » Mon May 14, 2012 8:10 am
Both time on the GMAT i got Q50, i am wondering what is the reason that, despite getting Q51 on Prep CATs, i ended up with Q50... What is the difference b/w Q50 or Q51, is it careless mistake or something else

A 1-point score fluctuation is not unusual. In fact, I'd be quite surprised if a person wrote 3 GMATs in a row and got the same Quant scores all 3 times.

I wouldn't try to attribute the 50/51 change to anything.

Cheers,
Brent

Brent,
How much difference does a point in quant(50->51) makes in the scaled GMAT score out of 800 ?

It's hard to say. If you examine the many debriefs in this forum you'll find instances in which there was no difference.
For example, one post indicates that Q50/V44 = 770 total score, while another post indicates that Q51/V44 = 770.
If there is a difference in scores, it's not very big (perhaps 10-20 points).

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks Brent.
I consider 10-20 points difference, quite a difference. :)

From the practice tests I've taken, the a math score of 50 vs. 51 has shifted my total either 0 or 10 points (never 20). I'm not disputing that it's possible to move 20, but I haven't seen that happen.

I have taken the exam 6 times, and I bounce between 50 and 51 on the quant and between 48, 50 and 51 on the verbal. At a very high level, one silly mistake could knock you down a point, but the difference between my worst score and best score is 10 points (a tribute to the GMAT scoring algorithm?) . In my opinion, 10-20 points would make a difference only if you were shooting for the 700 barrier.
