GMAT Essay Template for non-English Speakers

by Esmer » Tue Sep 04, 2012 7:17 am
Writing in English has always been a hassle for me for two reasons: 1) English is my third language, 2) I don't like writing.

To look good at GMAT essay I asked my very smart friend to create a handy template which I can remember and use. We went through a number of essay topics and soon we realized that all of them represent more or less the same logical patterns.

I attach the word document that we created. One may find it too simple; however, it brought be to 5.5 mark on AWA just recently. Good for someone whose native language is not English.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the post. I am going to practice my AWA writing with your template.

Hey Esmer,

The document is good, but I want to encourage everyone out there not to think of this in terms of memorizing. You're simply responding to the prompt. However, the basic rules remain the same:

1) The argument is always poorly reasoned.
2) The argument always has 3-4 assumptions in it.
3) Your intro should mention all the conclusions.
4) Each paragraph should focus on ONE assumption (I think it's incorrect to make some major distinction between explicit versus implicit assumptions; all assumptions are UNWRITTEN...otherwise it's not an assumption).
5)You should have a conclusion.

Oh, and a five paragraph essay beats a 4 paragraph essay, if you can find enough content.

Hope that helps!
