AWA Issue essay : Please review

by shivraj » Tue Aug 09, 2011 11:44 am
"Employees should expect no privacy while on the job, even when engaging in personal communication via telephone or e-mail. Employers are paying for their employees' time and have a reasonable expectation that this time is spent solely on work-related activities."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your views with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Response :

According to the author, employee should expect no privacy while on the job as employers are paying for their employee's time. This is grossly substandard argument made by the author and I disagree with it completely. There are various reasons which support my stand and I mention few below.

The first reason is that such a policy inherent delimits the human right to express freely . Adopting such a measure would infact, have a negative impact on the productivity of the employees. Employer should provide optimal facilties and comfortable policies which make the employees contribute more . Employer should have reasonable expectation from the employees and not intrude or deprive the privacy of the employee who is paid.

The second reason is that denial of access to telephone would be very dangerous in emergency situations. Suppose a family member is admitted in hospital and the near one need to intimate the situation to the employee, no access to telephone will hamper the trust bestowed between employer and employee. Such archaic policies will do no good either to an employer or an employee.

Hence, I believe the author's argument contains flaws and if implemented, will have serious repercussions. By granting access to personal communication, employers bestow trust in employees and this will infact, promote the responsibility in the relationship and instill value of accountability in employees .

Although you write forcefully, you have not understood the essay requirement. The issue essay and the argument essay have fundamentally different essay requirements. This question is an issue essay and your opinion is desired. However, you are using the rhetoric of the argument essay ("the argument is flawed", etc.). Don't confuse the two, because the reader may think you have not understood the requirement.
