manuevering around weaknesses

by rlewellen86 » Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:00 am
GMAT score: 640(34V,44Q).
Undergrad GPA: 3.2, Finance, University of North Texas

I have been working for two years at a regional investment bank on the company's trading floor. I have a Series 7 and 63 but my goal is to move over to an analyst position which requires a stronger academic background.

In college I was involved in a few extracurricular activities (Student investment group, finance and real estate clubs) but I have not been in anything since besides work related activities/fundraisers.

Are these extracurrilar activities, along with a few solid rec letters, strong essays, and a well built resume enough to make me competitive? Can an interview make up for weakensses? That is if I can get one.

I am aiming for a state school, Texas A&M, Rice, and SMU.

Thanks for any help.

Well given your GMAT schools like SMU and Texas are good for ya 0 they are about what I would call your "target schools", Rice is a bit tougher for you. You are gonna have to add a few more schools to your list (at about the same level, i.e. schools attainable with your GMAT) to even out the odds a bit.

With that, you do have to get crazy and make those essays SOAR. Cause what will get you in is your story and what makes you stand out.

One final tip: Forget about series 7 and 63, and nay finance-technical stuff. That's not what the schools want to see. They want to see LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK, INNOVATION, PRESENTATION SKILLS and so on and so forth.

Thanks for the help, I'll definitely spend a lot of time on the essays!

Can you recommend any other schools that would be good alternatives?

Well, as you know there are a LOT of schools out there! Plus there are many considerations - locations, tuition, school size, etc. A good place to start is to look at the rankings lists, and look at schools in which you have a higher GMAT than the average. Cross-reference that with salaries and employment statistics, and that's a good place to start. Then if you have any further questions, you let us know!

Also, if you want to aim for more competitive schools consider retaking the GMAT. Remember the schools only look at your highest score.
