Question : Many Americans cities have been unsuccessful in their efforts to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums and that treat them in their local communities

a. to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums and treat
b. to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums for treating

Here, I think b is perfect choice as I dont feel that move and treat are two different works.

Kindly suggest where I am wrong.

a is parallel.
to move.....and treat....
the above is a correct construction.

b uses FOR DOING which is unidiomatic
for eg, she drank coffee for staying awake.this sentence is wrong.

the correct sentence would be-
she drank coffee to stay awake.

i read this in mgmat guide long time ago.
any further knowledge on the topic would be helpful..

b. to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums for treating

I think B actually conveys the intended meaning of the sentence.

"move..." and "treat..." should not be parallel.

I traveled to the US to meet the President (Gerund)
I traveled to the US for meeting the President (Participle) is this incorrect?
