value of the larger of p and q

by jain2016 » Mon Apr 18, 2016 8:33 am
p and q are different two-digit prime numbers with the same digits, but in reversed order. What is the value of the larger of p and q?

(1) p + q = 110
(2) p - q = 36

Hi Experts,

Can you please advise that how statement 1 is sufficient.

I know that (37,73) will be the only case that satisfies. Here P could be 37 or 73 and same as q , so there will not be exact value of p and q.

Please advise and correct me.

Many thanks in advance.

The question does not ask for the values of p and q - if it did you'd be right. It asks what the larger of the two numbers is. It's possible that p =73 and it's possible that q = 73. Either way, the bigger number is 73.

Hi SJ,

If you look closely, the question does not ask you to find out the values of p and q.
It asks "What is the value of the larger of p and q?"

So it simply is asking what is the value of the larger number, which might be p or q.
Hence statement 1 is sufficient.

Does this help?
