Two new studies indicate that many people become obese more due to the fact that their bodies burn calories too slowly than overeating.

(A) due to the fact that their bodies burn calories too slowly than overeating
(B) due to their bodies burning calories too slowly than to eating too much
(C) because their bodies bum calories too slowly than that they are overeaters
(D) because their bodies bum calories too slowly than because they eat too much
(E) because of their bodies burning calories too slowly than because of their eating too much

OA: D

P.S: Although I got this one right, I'd like to know why EXACTLY Option E is wrong ?

@Verbal Experts - can you please share your thoughts ?

E: People become obese...because of their bodies.
Here, the conveyed meaning is that BODIES cause people to become obese.
Not the intended meaning.
The intended meaning is that people become obese because of what their bodies DO, as expressed in the OA:
People become obese because their bodies burn calories too slowly.
Eliminate E.

Another error:
E: People become obese more because of their bodies...than because of their eating.
it is illogical to compare eating (a noun that conveys an ACTION) to bodies (a noun that does NOT convey an action).
Eliminate E.

Mitch,
i read one of your post somewhere on the forum that possessive + gerund + direct object is incorrect phrasing.
Can we apply it in E?
Many thanks

A gerund is a VERBing that functions as a noun.
Generally, POSSESSIVE + GERUND + DIRECT OBJECT is an invalid construction, as discussed in my post here:
https://www.beatthegmat.com/noun-possess ... 88098.html.

E: their eating too much
Here:
their = possessive.
eating = gerund.
too much = direct object of eating.
The resulting construction -- POSSESSIVE + GERUND + DIRECT OBJECT -- seems a valid reason to eliminate E.

Hi ,

Can you please give me a reason to eliminate option A?

Many thanks in advance.
