Hi All,

Can someone please tell which of the below sentences are liked by GMAT ? or both of them are equally liked by GMAT ? Basically my doubt is as far as I know amount is used for non countable nouns....so is it ok to use the same for money in GMAT ?

1. Company sales last year were $100 billion, an amount.....
2. Company sales last year were $100 billion, a sum.....

Thanks
Mohit

Hi Mohit...
it is unclear what you are trying to say here, if you post the question and answers i might help. Amount is for uncountable things and money is uncountable.

Basically my doubt is in the following question. Here the OA is "E". But my doubt is E says " an amount"....amount is used to modify the uncountable nouns.....but here it seems to be modifying a figure...i.e. $167billion....

Can you please explain ?

=============================================

Sales of United States manufactured goods to nonindustrialized countries rose to $167 billion in 1992, which is 14 percent more than the previous year and largely offsets weak demand from Europe and Japan.

(A) which is 14 percent more than the previous year
(B) which is 14 percent higher than it was the previous year
(C) 14 percent higher than the previous year’s figure
(D) an amount that is 14 percent more than the previous year was
(E) an amount that is 14 percent higher than the previous ear's figure

Hi Mohit,

"Amount of money" modifies money, but here "an amount" refers to $167B and does not modify it. Use of word "Amount" here is different here. In other word in 1st sentence about the word "Amount" is used to quantify money, while "an amount" is not.

Thanks.

Can you please help me understand in the above question....why "E" is better then "C" ? Does in "C" the "14 percent...." modifying 1992....

if yes, then why the same is not the case with E...why "an amount" not modifying 1992....

in C the "14 percent..." makes the two sentences disconnected (run on). There needs to be a connecting word phrase. It is unclear what 14% refers to...
