Box office movies

by selango » Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:21 pm
Box office receipts for independent movies for the first half of this year have increased by 20 percent over the total receipts for independent movies for all of last year. Last year, 50 independent movies were released, while so far this year only 20 independent movies have been released. The number of independent movies slated for release in the second half of this year is roughly equal to the number released so far.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true?

A.The total box office receipts for independent movies this year will be significantly more than 20 percent greater than the receipts for independent movies last year.

B.The number of independent movies released in the first half of this year is equal to the number released in the first half of last year.

C.The price of a movie ticket has not increased since last year.

D.The average revenues of the independent films released during the first half of this year is greater than that of all independent films released last year.

E.The number of people seeing independent movies during the first half of this year is greater than the number who saw independent movies last year.

The key here is the word "must." Only one choice absolutely MUST be true.

A. If the movies made in the second half of the year do very poorly, then it's possible that this year's receipts will be little more than 20% over last years'. This doesn't have to be true, so we eliminate it.
B. We have no information on which to base a conclusion about when the 50 movies were released last year; it could have been 20 in the first half of the year, just like it is this year, but for all we know, all 50 of the movies could have been released at once. Eliminate this.
C. The prices of individual movie tickets aren't discussed in the argument. Eliminate.
D. This is the correct answer. The premise states that the receipts for the first half of this year are 20% greater than the receipts from all of last year, so this MUST be true.
E. This doesn't have to be true. Maybe the number of people seeing movies remained the same, but ticket prices went up. Eliminate.

A.The total box office receipts for independent movies this year will be significantly more than 20 percent greater than the receipts for independent movies last year.
what if the 20 movies to be released have 0 box office receipts. Hence cannot be inferred
B.The number of independent movies released in the first half of this year is equal to the number released in the first half of last year.cannot be established
C.The price of a movie ticket has not increased since last year.
Out of scope
D.The average revenues of the independent films released during the first half of this year is greater than that of all independent films released last year.
It has been mentioned - independent movies for the first half of this year have increased by 20 percent over the total receipts for independent movies for all of last year . So revenue this year is surely greater than revenue last year . We also know that this year 40 films will be released compared to last year when 50 films were released. Hence average this year will surely be greater
E.The number of people seeing independent movies during the first half of this year is greater than the number who saw independent movies last year.
