so devastated :(

by faery » Thu Jul 12, 2007 10:29 am
I am so crushed. I just took the GMATPrep diagnostic and scored a 390:( Now I am debating whether to even take the GMAT. How would I ever get up to a 600 and above? Has anyone ever scored this low? I mean, I could make up excuses for myself like (I was tired, etc.) but those are meaningless now. Should I give up now and do I even have hope to get a 600 or above?

A 200+ point score improvement is a large one. I have seen people do it, but not everyone can do it.

Have you been studying or did you take it cold? If you have been studying, it will be harder to hit 600; if you took it cold, there's more hope.

Unless you took it absolutely cold and completely didn't remember any of the math or grammar facts that are tested on the exam, it is likely that you will need to either take a class or work with a private tutor to achieve that much of a score improvement. It's tough to improve that much entirely on your own. It's also likely the case that you will need to devote 3 to 4 months, almost daily, to your study.

It will be a challenge, but others have done it in the past. One thing's for sure: you can't do it if you don't try. Good luck!

Stacey's advice is spot on. There's a chance you can improve to your target score, but it will be difficult.

That being said--don't let one stupid test stop you from achieving your b-school aspirations! Good luck!

HELP

by agourdine » Tue Jul 24, 2007 6:52 am
Hi. I'm also struggling w/my score (500)...I've only taken 2 practice exams so far, and I am also enrolled in the MGMAT online class. I also study almost everyday and for the most part, feel more comfortable w/the Verbal than Quant (Verbal has always been strongest for me). I plan on taking my exam in mid August, and I'm starting to panic just a little!

Am I being unrealistic in my goal of getting at least a 650? :?

You didn't mention how far into the class you are, but I'm guessing you're a little more than halfway into it if you're planning to take the test in less than a month. Most people don't start to see really substantial improvements until more towards the end of class because you've been practicing all sorts of things and trying to learn them well enough to execute them all on the test, but you haven't really had a lot of time to internalize everything. So you end up trying to take the test with all sorts of new approaches but only feeling maybe 50-70% comfortable with those approaches, and that doesn't do a lot for your score in the early weeks.

At the same time, you're looking for a 150 point improvement, which is substantial. You may need more than 3-4 weeks to get there - I'd say you're likely, in fact, to need more than 3-4 weeks. So you may need to postpone your test for a few weeks or a month to give yourself a better shot at getting to a 650.

Good luck!

GMAT online courses

by hal_qurtas » Sat Jul 28, 2007 12:49 pm
Hi,

I have attempted the GMAT twice, and have not done well, because I alway convience myself that I can do it, but I think it's time to study, and since I tend to over study I would like to have some sort guide.

So I'm think of purchasing an online course, what would you recommend?

Regard

Hal

Don't let yourself go down! The very first GMAT test I took cold I scored a 530 (it was a Princeton Review I guess). After two months of study I score regularly 630-650 on MGMAT practice tests. And I feel I can achieve 650 on the actual test. So, don't be too worried and study hard!!

Hal - you might want to post your question in a new thread so that people see it. I won't respond since I'm obviously biased and think our courses are the best! But I'll let other students say what they have liked.

Good luck!
