Profile for a Career in Consulting?

by insane_chants » Wed Sep 05, 2007 12:21 am
Dear Amy,

I would be glad if you could suggest few target schools/ profile match at top B schools, based upon the following details...

-MBA from a premier top 7 B school in India - top 10% of class
* I am aware certain schools frown upon a 2nd MBA, but a few of my batchmates from b-school have done a 2nd MBA from Chicago GSB and LBS. Also, i am clear that my 2nd MBA would be for a focussed career switch into consulting.

- Undergraduate in Commerce -65-70% score.
* This is my academic score during undergrad. Did my undergrad from a top 10 commerce college in India. The acad score is not very high, but slightly above average (top score would be 78%)
* I was involved in a few extra curriculars during this time, viz. editing the campus magazine, member of college social events board, served as treasurer in my final year. Also, took a computer science course during this time. Will these explain my low acads?
* I have also represented my school/ college in various sports from cricket, football (soccer) and hockey. I was also a national level youth-parliamentarian in school. My team came 2nd at teh nationals. Besides, i have quite a few school and district level debating awards, during school and college. Have also presented paper on Central Bank Economic policies, at a education seminar during undergrad. Was voted as the 2nd best paper.

- Work Exp - I have worked with top cos. post MBA including ITC (an FMCG major), Citigroup and IDBI Bank
* I have been working since 2002. I have worked extensively in retail assets teams within the banks. Started of in sales, portfolio grew from a small territory (approx 10 reportees) to currently handling sales and marketing for all retail products for a major Indian State. I have been promoted on fast tracks throughout, including a promotion in 6 months within the bank (the fastest in the company till date)
* Though my vertical and horizontal gwth has been extensive, i have worked only in India and also changed 3 jobs in the last 5 years. Will my growth, balance the job changes?
* I have been asked by a communications startup to head their national sales. I will be part of the senior mgmt team and the job is very entrepreneurial in nature. And is something i want to evidence in my applications. This could be my differentiating factor?

Community/ Volunteer
I havent actively done such work. During school I did some donation collection work for Soceity for the Blind, but this was an initiative of the school and cant be termed "voluntary".
I plan to apply to B schools in 2008, for the fall 2009 intake. Have spoken to a few volunteer organisations and intend to be actively involved in Educating the homeless/ street children.

- GMAT scored
* I am preparing for my GMAT currently. Initial scores in preparatory tests hover around 690-700. But, i have just started serious preparations and am confident that by the time i give my GMAT in march, i shall be scoring atleast 730.

I hope the lengthy treatise has not put you to sleep yet! I just wanted to provide as much information as would enable you to suggest me a best course of action.

As i said earlier, i am keen in a career in consulting and will be applying to schools in 2008. With this in mind, do you suggest what my target schools can be and/or any suggestions that i can work upon in building my profile over the next 12 months?

Thanks for the patience. Best Regards.

Hi insane_chants,

For a career switch into consulting, almost any of the top schools will work out for you. All of the firms recruit from the top schools, and the coursework and cases that you will study will be great preparation. With your background you may want to consider a school like Kellogg or Darden, with a strong reputation for marketing and strategy vs finance. The differences will be subtle however.

Your work experience sounds good, and I would not be worried about switching jobs if you were always moving up. You do need to explain your first MBA and why it wouldn't help you move into consulting without going back to school.

Other than working on your GMAT, you should be working on volunteer activities seriously over the next year - and try to do something that is significant and that will provide some leadership experience.

Good luck!
