The numbers x and y are not integers. The value of x is closest to which integers?

1) 4 is the integer that is closest to x + y

2) 1 is the integer that is closest to x - y

(1)
Clearly Insuff as x and y can take wide range of values

(2)
Clearly Insuff as x and y can take wide range of values

Combined

x+y = 4
x-y=1

x=2.5

It is impossible to determine whether x is closer to 2 or to 3. as all the values are to closest integer.

For eg x = 2.4 and y = 1.9 satisfies all the equations but is closest to 2
But x = 2.5 and y = 1.9 satisfies all the equations too but is closer to 3.

Hence Insuff answer E

It indeed is a good question.

1 ) 3.5 < x + y < 4.5
2 ) 0.5< x - y < 1.5

4 < 2x < 6
2< x < 3
