transcript

Hi Stacy,

I am applying for top b-schools. I have a question about my college transcripts.

After I recieved my engineering undergraduate degree, I took many classes in local community college. These classes are for my own interests and learning, such as tax preparation, photography, and graphic design, and so on. In fact, all of them are not related to my work or my goals in my mba essays, but I did recieve credits for these classes.

Do I need to include these classes in my application? Do you think it will have any negative effect to my application?

Thanks a lot!

L

Dear L,

The general rule of thumb is you would include any transcripts where you earned at least 9 hours of credit towards a degree plan. Since these were not courses that counted towards a degree plan, I think it is up to you on whether or not to include the community college transcript. I don't think the transcript will hurt you, and if you are inclined to err on the side of full disclosure, then you should probably submit it. You should probably make a note in your application, however, about the nature of the courses being for your personal development.

Regards,
Lisa
