Need Urgent Help To Improve My Score.

by gs_btg » Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:02 am
Hello,

This is my first post on this wonderful site.
Kindly reply to guide me so that I can achieve a GMAT score of >= 700.

Till now I have appeared for 4 CAT tests [GPrep1 & GPrep2 - two times each after re-installation].

My scores were -

GPrep 1 - 1st Attempt - 460
GPrep2 - 1st Attempt - 480
GPrep 1 - 2nd Attempt - 560 [Q - 48, V - 20]
GPrep 2 - 2nd Attempt - 570 [Q - 47, V - 22]

I am a non-native speaker of English language.

I have gone through the following verbal material till now -

Princeton Verbal
Kaplan Verbal Workbook
Princeton's Review Book
Kaplan GMAT Premier 2006 Edition
Manhattan SC Guide
Manhattan Critical Reasoning & Reading Comprehension Guide
Powerscore CR Bible
BTG Flash Cards
Manhattan Flash Cards
OG 11th Edition
Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction Review - Partially, Did not find it quite useful

I need to complete the following before my exam date -

1. 6 Manhattan GMAT Tests
2. 1000_SC, 1000_CR & 2000_RC
3. Manhattan GMAT Reading Comprehension or Manhattan GMAT Number Properties
4. Powerscore LSAT LR Bible
5. OG 10th Edition

My exam date is 13th Oct 2009. I have to reschedule it to 27th Oct 2009 as I want to complete 1000_SC, 1000_CR & 2000_RC questions and then 10 days before the exam I will read OG10.

Pls provide your me help/suggestions/strategies on how I can improve my verbal score. I am weak in RC & CR, comparatively better in SC. I plan to purchase either Manhattan GMAT Reading Comprehension or Manhattan GMAT Number Properties. If I buy from Amazon then will I get the 6 CATs along with the book or will I have to buy the book directly from Manhattan to get those important CAT tests.

Thanks

gs_btg.

To answer your last question: it doesn't matter from where you get the MGMAT guide as long as it's new. All new books come with the access code. If you buy it used then someone might have used the code before you.

You have quite the list of resources there. My biggest concern is that you have not properly reviewed all this wonderful material - merely breezing through it will not help, you need to carefully analyze your mistakes and digest concepts. How much time did you spend on this?

Your verbal is obviously killing your score, so if I were you I'd dedicate maybe 75% of my time to verbal improvement. Oh and BTW: the PowerScore LR Bible is the same as the CR Bible. The only difference is that the LR Bible contains extra chapters that concern types of questions you will not see on the GMAT. IMHO there's no value in having both.

thanks a lot DanaJ for your quick & helpful response.
i have spent last few months studying/reviewing the books which i have read - started from may 2009. to be honest earlier i was reading lesuirely - sometimes study/sometimes no study. i have not been well for last couple of months. i am working full time. i have a family to look at. no excuse but my fault. anyhow i have to work towards my goal. i will order manhattan rc book from amazon since it will be quicker to get it than via manhattan. i have read the manhattan gmat sc guide, powerscore cr bible, manhattan gmat cr & rc old guide, kaplan verbal 2006 workbook multiple times. should i read powerscore cr bible again instead of lsat lr bible? timing is a concern for me in verbal. right now i am doing 1000_sc, 1000_cr & 2000_cr. i have set a timeline of 1 min/ques - sc, 2-2.5 min/ques - cr & rc for me but i am unable to complete the ques within the planned time. if i improve my cr then i guess i will be able to improve my rc as well. should i regularly read online publications like economist etc to improve my reading skills as well as study the remaining gmat books listed in my first post. kindly guide.

Yes, review the CR Bible and don't waste time on the LR Bible. It will really help you with both CR and RC: they are kind of the same, only RC has longer passages and slightly less complex questions.

Reading stuff is a really good idea and will also help you with other things. For instance, I was reading Financial Times Europe, the free edition, the other day. Then I went to this admissions event organized by Columbia Business School and was in the room with a bunch of McKinsey consultants. Apparently, I was one of the few who had heard about the Cadbury-Kraft affair, which I think earned me points, so to speak.

My advise .. JUST master manhattan CR & SC

forget about the 100 books that you have !! it will confuse you more than it will help you.

work with these 2 books and skip one or two passages in the real test in order to save your slef some time to do very well in CR & SC !! (thats only if you are bad at RD as 90% of international's)

Good luck
