Please evaluate my profile

by LAOF » Wed Sep 02, 2009 5:04 pm
Hi! I would really appreciate it if you would help me by evaluating my profile. Altough its a bit long (sorry)

I'm mexican Im 30 years old (31 upon enrollment)

I have a 4.0 GPA at a competitive university in Mexico and I studied a Master in Corporate Finance with a 4.0 GPA again.

My GMAT score is 660 (Q: 41 V: 40)

I work in a bank as a regional credit manager. I have a team of analysts who review the loan applications for small and large businesses. I have been working in the bank for 6 years.

As some "highlights" of my career I could mention:

1) I have been awarded 3 promotions in six years. Context: I started my career in Banco del Bajio in 2003 as a credit analyst. By 2005 I was offered to be regional credit sub-manager. In November 2006 I became the banks Credit Analysis Manager (a sort of Operations coordinator for the bank's loan applications). Finally in 2007 I became one of the six Regional Credit Managers. (the youngest one ever)

2) I effectively rebuilt and turned around a team. Context: the Regional credit manager who preceded me had some trouble managing the people on his team and also had problems with the Regional Director because of some bad times of response on the loan applications. Because of this, the manager was removed from his post and I was offered the position. As soon as I arrived I let go some toxic elements on the team and interviewed and hired new 4 new analysts. In less than 100 days we were out of the slump and the team environment was great

--- Im weak on current extracurricular activities mostly because I work long hours. The strongest ones I could come up with are the following:
1) I was the president of an interschool organization which won the see and organized the national congress of the organization.Context: I campaigned and won the presidency of IMEF Universitario (Mexican Institute of Financial Executives for Undergraduates) for Leon's Chapters. During my administration we successfully organized and operated the yearly national congress of the organization. This happened 8 years ago...

2) Designed and taught Mathematical finance and Credit analysis course for banking executives. During the last year I've been teaching courses in the bank specially aimed at new executives. I devote around 12 hours per month to this courses.

Im applying to the following schools
HBS (visited)
Wharton (visited)
Chicago (visited)
Colombia (visited)
Tuck (not visited)
Notre Dame (not visited)

Thanks for your advice!!! :D :D :D

Hi Laof and thanks for your post. Please see my comments below:

Congrats on two consecutive 4.0 GPAs. That is quite an achievement. This will certainly help off set your GMAT score which is below average for the programs you are considering. How many times have you taken the GMAT? How did you prepare for the test? Would you consider taking it again? A score of 700+ would certainly help strengthen your profile.

It looks like you've had quite a successful career to date. Your growth is evident and it sounds like you've had a lot of responsibilities and leadership experience thus far. This will certainly give you plenty of potential topics for your essays.

I'm glad to see that you have been teaching the finance course for the last two years. Since you designed and teach the course you show a lot of initiative and leadership. Unfortunately, while it's good you were involved in undergrad it's not ideal to mention this or use it in your essays. Adcoms prefer to see recent examples.

You've compiled a solid list of programs and it's great to see you've visited nearly all of them! Since you did not share your short and long term goals I'm unsure as to how you identified these as your target programs. Can you share your goals with me? This will help me get a better since of your fit with the programs and help me as I evaluate your profile.

Thanks,

Stacey

Hi! thank you for your post!!!

My career plans are the following:
I want to start a consulting firm to help troubled companies through a holistic advice and while funding them with microcredits.
Context: working in a bank in credit analysis I get to look up close a wide range of companies. However I mostly focus on financial aspects of these companies. And Im trained specially at detecting risks and flaws. But I never get to give advice to these companies! Here is where my MBA comes in. I want to get the tools to be a competent consultant on subjects other than finance i.e. strategic planning, marketing...
My plan actually entails entering BAIN or BCG for 3 or 4 years after my MBA and than return to Mexico to start my firm.
So I looked for schools with strong financial backgrounds (it's still my favorite subject :P ) and a strong consulting and/or general management programs. Im also interested in schools with a strong alumni network.
The GMAT is actually a sore spot for me. I have taken it 3 times. But when preparing for the last appearence I was scoring above 700 on my pracice tests. I just didnt do well on my exam that day. However I think maybe presenting it 4 times could do more damage than good... even if I get 700+

Thanks again for your advice. :D :D

Hi,

Thanks for the additional information. I think your short and long term goals are sound. The adcom will certainly be able to understand your interest in starting your own firm and it's great that you can take an area which you already have knowledge and build upon it to achieve your goals. As long as you are specific and detail your plans you should have no trouble convincing them why you need your MBA.

As for the GMAT, the general rule of thumb is to avoid taking it more than 3 times. The exception to this rule is if you are quite certain that you can indeed score above 700. If you feel confident that you can do so, then it is great to take it a 4th time and break the 700 mark. If you think there is a strong chance you won't improve your score then perhaps it's best not to risk it.

I think you've put together a solid list of programs that align with your goals. My only suggestion would be to consider perhaps adding Darden to your list. It is similar to Tuck in class size and curriculum and has a great reputation.

Please feel free to send your resume to [email protected] should you wish to receive a free 30 minute assessment.

Best,

Stacey
