In a previous design, the weight of the discus, used in track competition is concentrated in a metal center, but now it is lined with lead around he perimeter, thereby improving stability in flight and resulting in longer throws.

1. Same as above

2. According to a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition is concentrated in a metal center, but now it is

3. Once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, the discus used in track competition is now

4. The discus used in track competition, once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, but now

5. The discus used in track competition was once designed having its weight concentrated in a metal center and now

Note-The answer here is 3. Sorry to mention the answer.I just need someone to help explain to me when to turn a sentence "upside down" like this one. Any strategies? I chose 5 and i still do not know why it is wrong.
Thankyou very much

The problem with 5 is "and" rather than "but"; the point of the sentence is contrast, and 5 does not highlight it with the conjunction.

As for when to "turn around the sentence", there isn't really a rule for that; the key is that the two things being contrasted be parallel. The sentence as written is contrasting the weight of the discus with the discus now (as opposed to contrasting discus and discus).
