GMAT PREP Questions

"In a stack of boards at a lumber yard, the 20th board from the top of the stack is immediately below the 16th board counting from the bottom of the stack. How many boards are in the stack?"

a. 38
b. 36
c. 35
d. 34 (ans)
e. 32

This can be easily understood through a figure.

the questions says :
20th board from the top of the stack is immediately below the 16th board

so count 20 board from top and mark it below the 16h board from bottom, this means that the 20th board from top is actually 15th board from bottom, counting upwards will lead you to only ONE answer and that is 34.

The 20th board from the top is 1 below the 16th from the bottom. That means the 20th board from the top = to the 15th board from the bottom.

top ---------------------------

16th from bottom-----------
20th from top--------------- this is also the 15th from the bottom, so if this
is the 15th from bottom then there are 19 from
the top. 19 + 15 = 34

bottom ----------------------

that is true for non-native english speakers language barrier makes up for a big big part the issues we meet when working out problems!! :(
