590: Tips for Next Steps

by dlink32 » Tue Dec 29, 2009 8:49 am
Hi All,

As of last week, I completed my first attempt at the GMAT. Despite several months of preparation, I scored 590 (36Q, 35V). Prior to the exam, I studied all the OGs (extras included) and completed a prep course (Oxford seminars). I also practiced using the Manhattan prep exams and PowerPrep software. These materials were accurate of my performance on the real exam.

Going forward, I have an ambitious goal to score 700+ on the exam. While I'm eager to get started, I want to ensure that my approach is effective rather than repetitive. Although I believe reviewing the official guides could be valuable, I feel as if this will generate similar results.

I'm currently considering to register for another prep course (Princeton or Manhattan) or getting a private tutor. Can anyone provide some insight into the best option? While I recognize there is no exact formula, I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

I have only experienced progress on practice exams and not the real thing yet (test is in late Jan), I think I learned through trial and error the best way to proceed. It really depends on how much time you have. What I found to be the most helpful was to constantly review and drill. I would say an early stumbling block I encountered was learning new material, moving on to something else, and then forgetting the original new material I learned. So lets say you devote 4 hours to studying. Initially you should spend 4 hours learning new material. And then you should go down to 3.5 hours studying .5 hours reviewing the material you went over. Next, 3 hours studying new material, and an hour reviewing, all the way until you are spending 4 hours just reviewing. Good luck.
