Veritas Statistics/Probability/Combinations Book

I took the GMAT this Saturday. I scored a 680 (Q44/V40). I feel pretty confident in my verbal, but obviously math is where I need to improve.

I already did all of the quant questions in the OG Official Guide, OG Verbal Guide, and the Kaplan800 book. I'm going on a trip so I'll start studying again in a few weeks. I plan on redoing all the OG Official/OG Verbal questions again. I was also going to get the MGMAT Advance Quant book

I'm curious if there are any general opinions regarding the above Veritas book. I do struggle with statistics, probability and combinations. However, I wonder if it's worth my time to do a whole book on them, since those questions don't appear that frequently on the exam.

Also, any other Advanced Quant books that you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Great question. As a Veritas prep instructor, I am extremely impressed with the coverage that Veritas has on Stats/Prob/Combos. You can expect to see somewhere around 4-5 of these questions combined on the quant portion of the exam. Because you are going to retake the GMAT with the goal of improving your quant performance, I absolutely think that it is worth your time to go through this book. It sounds like you are prepared to study hard, and I think that you would benefit tremendously from Veritas' coverage of these materials.

- 4GMAT books on Number Theory.

Stats, Probability and Combinatorics, is a very good and very interesting book. There are nearly as many questions for these subjects combined as there are for Geometry. Perhaps 4 questions on these subjects compared to maybe 6 Geometry questions. But the difference is this: You can study every geometry book out there and still miss a couple of really tough geometry questions on the exam! But for stats, probability and combinatorics, if you have studied, then you should get even high difficulty questions right in a reasonable amount of time. It is one of the last subjects to study because there are fewer questions on these topics, but it could give you a boost. If you are looking for advanced math books this is one of them!

I would say start with the MGMAT advanced Quant book and then if you are still struggling with statistics, probability and combinations, then try going over the full Veritas book. Since you are already doing pretty well, the Advanced quant book might be all you need to get you to where you want to be.

I guess it all depends on what types of GMAT Quant questions you were getting wrong as you were prepping? Did you do a regular Error Log or keep track of all the Quant probs you got wrong on these CATs? If there was another Quant concept tripping you up on a more regular basis -- ie. Coordinate Geo, or Word Problems involving interest/rates and work/mixtures, etc. then it might be more valuable to devote time to those. I personally think time spend on a variety of challenging word problems is time NEVER wasted so I highly suggest MGMAT Word Translation. But yes, Veritas makes great books and Prob/Perm/Comb will definitely stretch you!
