If ab ≠ 0, is ab > a/b ?

(1) |b| > 1

(2) ab + a/b > 0
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

ab =! 0

To Find: ab > a/b

Statement 1:
|b| > 1

--> b < -1 or b > 1
a b
+ + --> YES
- + --> NO
INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
ab > -a/b
a b
+ + --> YES
- + --> NO
+ - --> NO
- - --> YES
a & b have same sign.. but b can be less than one as well
INSUFFICIENT

Combining...
- a & b have same sign
- b < -1 or b > 1
So,
a b
+ + --> YES
- - --> YES
SUFFICIENT

Hi vinay1983,

Here's how you can use a mix of TESTing values and Number Properties against this DS prompt:

We're told that AB does NOT equal 0. We're asked if AB > A/B? This is a YES/NO question.

Fact 1: |B| > 1

B = 2
A = 1
Is 2 > 1/2 YES

B = -2
A = 1
Is -2 > -1/2 NO
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

Fact 2: AB + A/B > 0

There's a number property in this Fact; both A and B are either positive OR negative

A = 1
B = 2
Is 2 > 1/2 YES

A = 2
B = 1
Is 2 > 2? NO
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, since both A and B have the same "sign", AB = positive and A/B = positive.
Since | B | > 1, we know that multiplying A by B makes A "bigger" and dividing A by B makes A "smaller", so the answer to the question will ALWAYS be YES.

Final Answer: C
