Westville and Eastown are 55 miles apart. Derek sets off from Westville at 1pm travelling towards Eastown at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. Emily sets of from Eastown at 1:10pm and drives towards Westville at an average speed of 40 miles per hour. At what time will they pass each other on the road between Westville and Eastown?
1:27pm
1:30pm
1:33pm
1:37pm
1:43pm

qa is 1:37

Qa is quite clear once you account for the 10 minute gap. BUt why do we add the 27 minutes to the 1:10 pm and not 1pm? Also in order to fibnd the 10 munte gap why dont we take the rate of Emily (40mph) and see how long she travels. I am just try ing to nail this down and commit to memory and understand the logic. Please no need to solve the question.

only full explanations please!

this is how I would solve this:
-initially they are 55 mi apart.
D drives for 10 min before anything happens
-Now they are 45 mi apart
-They approach each other at 100mi/hr

to cover the 45 mi between them we get 27 min.
We add this to 1:10PM because thats the time when they are 45 mi apart (at 1:00 PM they are 55 mi apart).

Derek: 55 - d = 60(t + 1/6)
Emily: d = 40t

55 - 40t = 60t + 10

-100t = -45

t = 45/100

Convert into hours/minutes:

45/100 = x/60

100x = 2700

x = 27

1:10PM + 27 minutes = 1:37PM
