OG Verbal Review Q96 Help with appositive

by bkw » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:28 pm
Floating in the waters of the equatorial Pacific, an
array of buoys collects and transmits data on long-term
interactions between the ocean and the /u atmosphere, interactions that affect /u global climate.

a atmosphere, interactions that affect
b atmosphere, with interactions affecting
c atmosphere that affects
d atmosphere that is affecting
e atmosphere as affects

correct ans is: A

however, I picked C without knowing exactly why (more of a sounds good guess). I have read the explanation in the Verbal Review, but I still do not understand why A is best here,

could someone please explain more?

thanks

I think logical meaning must help you in this type of question.

a atmosphere, interactions that affect
b atmosphere, with interactions affecting
c atmosphere that affects
d atmosphere that is affecting
e atmosphere as affects
The goal is not to pick what seems the best but to eliminate the four answer choices that are definitely wrong. Any answer choice that contains a clear error or changes the intended meaning of the sentence can be eliminated.

In B, it is unclear what is being modified by the phrase with interactions affecting global climate. Eliminate B.

C and D incorrectly state that the atmosphere affects/is affecting global climate. The intended meaning of the original sentence is that the interactions affect global climate. Eliminate C and D.

In E, it is unclear what is being modified by the phrase as affects global climate. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is A.
