The athlete went from also-ran to local hero after scoring the decisive points in the championship game.

a. from also-ran to local hero
b. from being an also-run to became a local hero
c. from also-run to became a local hero
d. from what was also-ran status to that of local hero
e. from being an also-run to local hero

I am mixed with A and D, how to pick the best!!

You are in the right track GmatKiss.

a. from also-ran to local hero
b. from being an also-run to became a local hero
c. from also-run to became a local hero
d. from what was also-ran status to that of local hero
e. from being an also-run to local hero

check ||ism here. Visibly A looks parallel.
Now lets c the other option you have quoted 'D',

from /what was also-ran status/ to /that of local hero/

'What was also-ran status' is lengthy and awkward.
