Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

In California today, Hispanics under the age of eighteen account for more than 43
percent, compared with a decade ago, when it was about 35 percent.
A. In California today, Hispanics under the age of eighteen account for more than 43
percent, compared with a decade ago, when it was about 35 percent.
B. Of the Californians under the age of eighteen, today more than 43 percent of them are
Hispanic, compared with a decade ago, when it was about 35 percent.
C. Today, more than 43 percent of Californians under the age of eighteen are Hispanic,
compared with about 35 percent a decade ago.
D. Today, compared to a decade ago, Californians who are Hispanics under the age of
eighteen account for more than 43 percent, whereas it was about 35 percent.
E. Today, Hispanics under the age of eighteen in California account for more than 43
percent, unlike a decade ago, when it was about 35 percent.

Please help.

My choice was option C

A,E does not specify percentage of what ? population or it can be anything.Eliminated.
B compares 43% with decade. hence eliminated.
D uses double comparison between today and decade as well as between 43 and 35 %. hence eliminated.

C is the correct usage here.

The problem with A is that they account for "more than 43 percent." But "43 percent" of what, exactly? We're missing a comparison, and E has the same issue.

B - "when it was" disrupts the comparison, and the modification in the first clause if awkward
C - Correctly compares "43 percent today" with "35 percent a decade ago"
D - We want to compare the FIGURES not the time periods.

Thank for explanation. Can you give more example relating to the kind of comparison like this?

One way to look at it is that it in A does not have any antecedent. it (a singular) cannot refer to Hispanics (plural), but even if this singular-plural issue was not there, A would still not have been correct, since we cannot compare Hispanics (people/species) with 35 percent (a percentage). Remember there always has to be an apples to apples comparison.

So, for example, following would have been correct:

In California today, the percentage of Hispanics under the age of eighteen is more than 43 , compared with a decade ago, when it was about 35.

In the above sentence, it correctly refers to percentage of Hispanics under the age of eighteen.
