Hello,

I have a few questions about the perception of my profile. I am going to be graduating from University of Phoenix with a BS in Business w/ finance emphasis. 1st, I know there is a stigma attached to this degree, I feel I have gained much from it but I know it is probably an issue at most schools. I have a 3.63 program GPA right now and plan on getting all A's but we will see (I have 6 classes left) I transferred 14.5 units from a local community college and my transcript from there is a massacre. I cared about working and not about school at the time. I don't exactly know its effect on my total GPA but my final 2 years will be something like a 3.70.

I sat and scored a 620 on the GMAT about a month ago. Equal scores on Quant/Verbal and got a 4.0 on the writing assessment. I have cracked the GMAT books opened again and am considering retaking. I doubt I am going to have a major leap but I know a 20 point jump would help.

As far as work experience I have 7 years (but it is all before BS graduation) at a small real estate development firm from Orange County, CA (www.spectrum-communities.com). 1st 3 years I was an administrative assistant. I went into analyzing investments (primarily real estate, it really wasn't that quant heavy as analysis of RE is more of an art than a science, however I won't be stressing this on my App.) And now manage projects on the field for the firm, as well as continuing my work as an analyst.

Likely for money reasons, and because I assume it will be hard to get good rec's from a boss who knows I am quitting after a year, I will be doing a PT program.

So here are the options that I know of while in New York.

NYU
Fordham
Rutgers
Indiana University (online)
Duke MBA-Cross Continent (online)

So I would like an opinion of what you think my chances are for these programs (part time). And what people think of the online programs.

I forgot to mention I was a band 10 for CFA level 1 and am considering taking it again ( I will probably pass, I barely failed) DEC 2010. How much of an affect will that have on the App if I do take and pass it?

i'm going to speak candidly as a fellow corporate climbing new yorker... I call the island of Manhattan the land of MBAs and I can extrapolate that to other masters degrees... you will be at a huge disadvantage if you then get your MBA online. you'll be competiting against the hbses and stanfords and whartons etc...

I would also look into Pace and Baruch with Pace > Baruch. i'm not sure what you want to go into post mba, but people are "familiar" with Baruch in the tri-state area...

with regards to the Langone program @ NYU, just keep in mind that it is the highest ranked PT program in the country (literally), so your recs & essays would need to be STELLAR...

i'm not too familiar with Rutgers MBA program although I should be, since that's my alma mater

hope I offered some insight

Thank you for the input. Have you heard much about Fordham? I have heard it is the best PT program other than NYU.

For part time programs would you say this is the order of prestige?

NYU
Fordham
Rutgers
Pace
Baruch

Let me know what you think.

I am not really planning on becoming an investment banker (My major will be finance or finance/entreprenuership), and am eventually planning on starting my own RE development firm in the future because I know how they run inside and out. I want more advanced knowledge and a good job to pay off the loans before I pursue that however.

Yes I think that's the exact hierarchy of the PT programs. I haven't heard much about Fordham, which is surprising since it's 10 blocks north of my apt. I know it's a good program but I don't know anyone who is in it or has graduated from it. Most people here looking for PT programs try for NYU.

Well we can definitely use your RE expertise here! I was just reading a couple articles today about the RE market in NY. Great for anyone looking to buy a condo now... because I'll tell ya.. before it was UNREAL!

Do you think even the Duke online MBA would be a major disadvantage?

The online option is really a backup option for me anyway, I would much prefer a brick and mortar.

Duke "sounds" better... imo though I say keep it as a back up...

will you be taking the GMAT again?

yes I am currently studying to take it again. I believe I can do better, although I am not sure I have the time and energy to pull it to something like 700. I am currently working, finishing my undergrad, studying for GMAT, and planning a wedding/honeymoon. I am thinking I will end up with a 650 which is way above the average of all of the schools besides NYU (their mean is 675)

Yeah if you score a 650 you'll be good I think... At the very least Fordham.. My friend was accepted with a 580 to Fordham .. He declined though

Why did he decline, did he get into something better or did he decide to wait?

Well his job would only pay up to $10k/year... and he didn't think he would get in. He knew all along that he wouldn't be able to afford it. He goes to the New School now... I don't know anything about that...

Brick and Mortar and online options have their advantages and disadvantages. After moving to NY i found that my option of brick and mortar was limited since i had a tough time getting around the city. The online classes saved me, but i basically had to teach everything to myself. No help. What do you guys prefer?

For me, I really don't care how convenient it is to get to school, I want to get into the best one possible. Have you had experience with a top online MBA?

The Kelley Direct (IU Kelley online MBA) program is good. You will have access to the same graduate career services as in-residence. I am in a position to give an opinion, I have done an online MBA (UoP) and am currently in-residence at IU Kelley in the MSIS program. If you do an online program, at least take one offered from a ranked b-school and ask the recruiter about networking and career opportunities compared to in-residence. Read my opinion on the matter at https://bschool.bangosoft.com/2010/11/23 ... aditional/ if you like. Best wishes.
