This is a great question to Backsolve, plugging in each answer choice.

If we assume Alex's fuel oil bill for January was $240, we can set up a proportion with the ratio given.

3/2 = Feb/Jan

3/2 = Feb/240

720 = 2(Feb)

360 = February's fuel oil bill

If it was $40 more, or $400, then the ratio would be 5/3. Let's reduce the final fraction to make sure:

$400/$240 = 200/120 = 100/60 = 50/30 = 5/3.

The correct answer is (A).

I would think twice b4 using this method, as it is too time consuming :(
