Hi,
workers = officers + rest
Let the number of workers be n
So, n*60 = 12*400 + (n-12)*56
=> n(60-56) = 12(400-56)
=> n*4 = 12*344.
So, n= 3*344 = 1032
Cheers!

Say the number of workers = W = (Number of officers + Rest)
Hence, Rest = (W - 12)

Total salary = (Total number of worker)*(Avg salary per head of all workers) = 60W

Again, total salary = Total salary of the officers + Total salary of the rest = 12*400 + (W - 12)*56

So, 60W = 12*400 + 56(W - 12)
--> 60W = 4800 + 56W - 12*56
--> 4W = 4800 - 12*56
--> W = (4800 - 12*56)/4 = 1200 - 3*56 = 1200 - 168 = 1032

Therefore, the total number of workers in the factory is 1032.

Each officer is 340 above the average. Together, the 12 officers "contribute" 340*12 Rs above the average - a quantity that needs to be offset by an x number of workers, each of which is 4 below the average of 60. Thus, the number of workers needed to offset 340*12 is

x=340*12 / 4 = 340*3 = 1020.

So there are 12 officers at 400, and 1020 workers at 56, and together these two groups offset each other to an average of 60. total of 12+1020 = 1032 workers in the factory.
