OG Guide 2016

by quitaskinme » Fri Oct 23, 2015 10:44 pm
I have the OG guide 2016 and yeah it has a lot of problems, but so far i'm working on the math problems and the explanations are absolutely horrible! How is everyone getting around this? Anyone recommend a book that has the same type of official GMAT questions but with way better explanations?

You have come to the right place. Most of the questions in the OG have been explained in these forums and therein solved in multiple cool ways.

You can do searches on the questions either via the search bar toward the top right of the page or via web searches.

Alternatively, you can just search these forums by question type and get questions to work on.

Hi quitaskinme,

You're going to find that most GMAT questions (Quant and Verbal) can be answered with a variety of different approaches. The explanations offered in the OG tend to focus on the 'technical' work involved - while correct, they're not necessarily 'easy' or 'fast' approaches though.

As Marty pointed out, you'll likely find the explanations offered in these Forums to be a bit easier to deal with (and you'll learn a number of different tips, patterns, 'shortcuts', etc. involved in each question). You should also be able to find video explanations around the internet for most of those questions too (although the utility and quality will vary).

To add to Marty's comment, you can also focus on one topic at a time by using BTG's tagging feature. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as statistics questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... statistics
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options.

I think the explanations are ... well, frosty (I was looking for a diplomatic word there) by design. The testwriters probably don't want to reveal the shortcuts or general principles being tested, but they do feel obliged to solve the problem, so they do so as technically as possible.

Luckily you've come to the right place! The OG problems are also explained all over the internet, so a quick Google search for a snippet of the text of any problem should turn up many (better!) explanations.
