When a nonzero number is raised to an even power, the result is positive.
Thus, z� > 0.
Thus, for it be true that x³y�(pos) > 0, it would have to be true that x³y� is positive.

When a negative number is raised to an odd power, the result is negative.
When a positive number is raised to an odd power, the result is positive.
Thus:
If x and y are both negative, then x³y� = (neg)(neg) = positive.
If x and y are both positive, then x³y� = (pos)(pos) = positive.
If x and y are different signs, then x³y� = negative.

Question rephrased: Do x and y have the same sign?

Statement 1: xy > z�.
Since z� > 0, we know that xy > 0.
Thus, x and y have the same sign.
SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: x > z.
No information about y.
It's possible that x=2, y=1, and z=1, in which case x and y have the same sign.
It's possible that x=2, y=-1 and z=1, in which case x and y have different signs.
INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is A.

This was a bit easy problem but tests your knowledge of number systems.
Nice explanation though.
