A certain car averages 25 miles per gallon of gasoline when driven in the city and 40 miles per gallon when driven on the highway. According to these rates, which of the following is closest to the number of miles per gallon that the car averages when it is driven 10 miles in the city and then 50 miles on the highway?

[10/60 * 25] + [50/60 * 40] = 37ish.

Basically you would use a weighted average for this problem.

Gasoline Required to run 10 miles in the city = 10/25 = 0.4
Gasoline Required to run 50 miles in the city = 50/40 = 1.25

Average = Total Distance traveled /Total Consumption = 55/1.65 = 550/16.5 = 1100/33 = 100/3 = 33.33

It should be 60/1.65 (since distance traveled is 60) = 36.36

total distance is 60
