Need advice badly

by 2nyu4mba » Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:26 am
Last week, I finally decided to get an MBA. At NYU or UCLA.

I've never before considered myself a business guy, and the idea of getting an MBA was previously unthinkable.

I'm 43, and my undergrad years are nothing to brag about. In fact, they're probably something to hide. If I get in to B-school, it won't be because of my GPA.

My resume is less than stellar. I never could find stable work long enough. I have no volunteer work, extra curricular activities, leadership positions, or awards to show the school. I work on my own as a web designer, so I don't have an employer to submit a recommendation form.

I'm studying for the GMAT. The school might not accept me anyway, but scoring high is all I've got to hope on.

After years in the wilderness, I want to make a new start. I finally found a serious purpose. But with my weak background, I need advice on what to do next. Can I do anything now to improve my chances of getting into either NYU/UCLA? I know I'm aiming high -- maybe too high -- but I think I can do it once I'm in. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Well it seems like you have a tough fight ahead of you. It's hard for me to say what exactly you should do, because you write you have no volunteer, no leadership etc....
But before passing such judgement on yourself, I would try and dig out what I could out of your profile.
I mean it's not like you are gonna write in an essay "I'm less than average, please don't take me!"

Overall your strategy should be to try and get as much of that stuff out as possible, gloss over some weaknesses, and attack others head on.

OK I get the message: basically my chances suck. Not that I didn't already know. So with no outside leadership or volunteer experience, or business background, I'm pretty much locked out. Then what are practical alternatives to the elite b-schools in the field of mass media? I looked into a communications degree but I want to focus on the business rather than creative end of entertainment.

Nope! That wasn't the point...

What I meant is that we need to DIG!

You may have a lot more stuff in your profile than you expect. We just need to work hard to pull it out and make your chances as good as they can get. That was my point :)
Yes, maybe it will be tough going, but never say never, dude.

Well, I'm leaning towards studying for the GMAT -- nothing to lose, I guess. It's the only thing I can do anyway to prove that I'm committed and qualified for b-school. I'm just wondering if it's worth the effort, especially considering the odds.

Assuming I could dig up something favorable from my profile like you said, would a high GMAT score (700+) offset a weak background, and give me a decent shot at getting into b-school? How much weight would the schools give to the GMAT vs. the rest?

No doubt that beating the heck out of your GMAT will help. But just as important if not more is your STORY. Why now? How will it be so helpful at your age? etc. If you deal with these things head on, you will be doing the best thing you can for your profile.
