Enzymes

by Katrusya » Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:07 am
In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's trying to meabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it.
A.
B.trying that it meabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.
C.attempt to try to meabolize, or render harmless, such a chemical irritant.
D.attempt to try and meabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritating it.
E.attempt to meabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant

OA is E

I have a question regarding parallelism.
...production of enzymes that are organism's attempt...
"Enzymes are" is plural. Why it is correct that Enzymes are attempt?
Why it's not Enzymes are organism's attempts????

to attempt is to try.
Atempt to try is redundant-> C is wrong

Are you sure that the question posted was correct? I don't think "attempt to try to" makes much sense.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

Choice (E) should have read attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.

"attempt to try" is redundant.

The OA is (E)

I have double checked.
Everything that's written is correct!

So, Why the enzymes are organism's attempt NOT attempts??

Are you sure? This question is from OG 12 question 24 and my choice E is different from your Choice E.

Enzymes are plural...so the enzymes attempt.

He she it attempts.

They attempt.

Yes you are right!!!
Thanks!!
I've fixed it.
I know the subj-verb agreement.
But here ....production of enzymes that are organism's attempt....
The verb that agrees with ENZYMES is ARE
Here is a comparison
Enzymes as organism's efforts (or attempts) to metabolize and...
Am I wrong?
Attempt is noun here but not verb.
