sentence from nytimes- pronoun

by nafiul9090 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 8:20 pm
The Speed of his elevation, analysts in the region said, reflected the insecurity of the the young leader's status as much as it did the secretive leadership's need to have a solid power center in place immediately

what is the antecedent or referent of the pronoun it? is it the speed or the insecurity??[/b]

Yes, in this sentence the antecedent/pronoun referent is the noun phrase, 'speed of his elevation.'

We can use 'it' to refer to noun phrases as long as there is no ambiguity within the sentence. Here, there is no other possible referent besides 'speed of his elevation.' The structure is 'The speed of his elevation...reflected 'A' as much as it (the speed of his elevation) did B.

Hope that helps :).
