A catfish passes on to its offspring not only a particular genetic makeup and also definite environmental needs, such as for one specific lake's temperature and salinity.
1. and also definite environmental needs, such as for one specific lake's temperature
2. and also definite environmental needs, like the temperature of one specific lake
3. but also definite environmental needs, such as for the temperature of one specific lake
4. but also definite environmental needs, like one specific lake's temperature
5. but also definite environmental needs, such as for one specific lake's temperature

The correct answer is E, but what is the different between C and #E. In others what is the difference between " the temperature of one specific lake" and " one specific lake's temperature"

here main point was to use not only....but also so A n B are out. now out of C,D and E we have to choose d is having like which gives comparision which we dont need so out.

left wid C and E . for the temperature of one specific lake or one specific's lakes temperature here the second one sounds better and it is also not so wordy. GMAT prefers simplicity hence E is the better option.

i dont know any other specific reason for the above

C changes the meaning. If you read the complete sentence followed after comma, we have been presented with 2 sets of examples - lake's temperature and lake's salinity. for the temperature of one specific lake changes the meaning. Sentence wants to put together lake's temperature and salinity, which are properties of lake. Similar thing on the either side of AND...i don't know if i am clear.
