clearly between A and D..

Other options have modifer issues or distorts the orignal meaning.

encompasses .. "with" two thrids of its area -- good

"have" -- incorrect.

I get A.

As someone else said in some other post, D is a run-on sentence

There would need to be a semicolon between islands and two in order for D to be correct.
I choose A as well

All other choices referrent of "its" is not clear.

A) two of them with two thirds of its area
B) two thirds of their area being in two of them Their is referring to islands here
C) and its area is two thirds in two islands
D) two of them have two thirds of its area ........Run on
E) which have two thirds of its area in two of them

guess it is C

My answer is C, I feel "its" modifies "the republic of Philippines" correctly. the person who posted the question, can you post the correct answer?

I'm guessing that "A" is the answer, even though I feel a little uncomfortable with using "with" to emphasize "two thirds of its area". Another problem with "A" is that it uses two pronouns in succession ("them" and "it").

Nonetheless, I think the other answers are more problematic than "A".

"B" attachs the pronoun "them" at the end of the sentence, which I think is slightly confusing and awkward. "B" also strings together two pronouns -- "their" and "them" -- in a way which is even more graceless than the way that pronouns are used in "A".

"C" and "E" are far to awkward to qualify as grammatical answers. I reject "D" because it is phrased in such a way as to begin an entirely new sentence or sentence fragment, and it probably cannot be used without putting an "and" immediately after the comma.
