That the new managing editor rose from the publication’s “soft” news sections to a leadership position is more of a landmark in the industry than her being a woman.
(A) her being a woman
(B) being a woman is
(C) her womanhood
(D) that she was a woman
(E) that she is a woman

OA -E
Y NOT D

do you mean , she is no longer a woman once she became a leader. "was" means past. This is certainly not the case.

The correct idomatic expression is:

That X than that Y where X,Y are parallel

X-> THE NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR...
Y-> SHE IS A WOMAN...

Agree with Imcste that she is still a woman and using "was" would project an incorrect meaning.

even if you do not know idiom

That ...That offers parallelism, so why not select it..

Also, Being related options are always skeptical.

I converted the sentence into following form:
that x is more of a landmark...than that y is a woman

1. That A than that B is parallel.
2. "that x is more of a landmark" is in present tense.
