a very interesting question...

Q] In assessing the problems faced by rural migrant workers, the question of whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant.

[A] In assessing the problems faced by rural migrant workers, the question of whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant.

The question of whether the rural migrant worker is better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant in assessing the problems that they face.

[C] A question that is irrelevant in assessing the problems that rural migrant workers face is whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor.

[D] In an assessment of the problems faced by rural migrant workers, the question of whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant.

[E] The question of whether the rural migrant worker is better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant in an assessment of the problems that they face.

The given OA is D.

POE:

Option B and E: these two options get cancelled out because of wrong subject-verb agreement.
'The rural migrant worker' and the pronoun 'they' used in the sentence.

Option A: Use of a wrong modifier i.e the question cannot assess the problems faced by ....

Left with options C and D...

Can anyone answer what is wrong with the option C...

Kindly reply...

Signal: Between options C and D, the only signal that I found is this:

The use of articles i.e 'A' and 'the'.

the sentence clearly mentions only about that particular question and not about some other questions. So it should be 'the'...

Please can any of the experts please help...

Kind request...

By the help of POE, I was down to C & D. I have one question if any one can explain. In C & D, there is comparison of rural migrant workers with "the urban working poor". Is the working poor plural?

C] A question that is irrelevant in assessing the problems that rural migrant workers face is whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor.

[D] In an assessment of the problems faced by rural migrant workers, the question of whether they are better off materially than the urban working poor is irrelevant.

Hey There,

To be honest, I also choose C as the answer, but then I found this link-

https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/in- ... t3571.html

It explains that the option C has the following mistakes-

'the problems faced by rural migrant workers' is better than 'the problems that rural migrant workers face'.

'a question that is irrelevant in doing X is Y' is inferior to 'the question of Y is irrelevant in doing X', because the latter is clearer and more direct.

Hope this helps
