A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.

(A) beating in unison and adopting

(B) they beat in unison while adopting

(C) beat in unison, and adopt

(D) beating in unison yet adopting

(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt

Can anyone explain? thanks.

This Q is testing whether the test taker can identify the meaning and use the correct words.

It talks about a peculiar feature, one that stands out

cells beat in unison, but have specialized orientations exclusive of one another.

The sentence as it is conveys a meaning that cells that beat in unison probably will have specialized orientations. Then whats peculiar about it. Nothing. For it to be peculiar, they beat in unison but adapt different orientations, which are exclusive. generally cells beating in unison probably will have the same orientation

yet shows that peculiarity and hence D

Can you please underline the incorrect part of the sentence going forward?

"Adhere" is parallel to " Beat" and "adopt"

I am as well confused with answer D. It should be C since the modifier 'beating' cannot be used here as it will modify the subject of the the clause ---- THE FEATURE ......

the modifier -- beat --- should need to be used here since 'beat' modifies the noun ... in this case, to 'cells' that beat in unison, and adopt

why it can't be C
yet is required here. "beating in unison" and "adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another. " are contrasting characteristics here. so you need "yet" to connect these two.

D beating in unison, yet adopting
this option is incorrect here becuase -ing form here shows cause and effect but there is no cause and effect relationship here. they are individual phenomenons occuring here

hence

Correct Option:- beat in unison, and adopt
