There are more than forty newspapers published in the cities of Kerala, a state on the Malabar Coast, which reflects the fact that Keralans are by far India's most literate citizens.

(A) which reflects
(B) and that number reflects
(C) which reflect
(D) that number reflects
(E) that reflects

OA: B

[spoiler]Between B and D - Can we rule out D because "that" cannot be used immediately after comma?[/spoiler]

Vikas, D would make it a run on sentence. In D, the 2 independent clauses in sentence are just joined by a comma. Therefore B is the correct answer here

apart from the run on sentence, do you reckon that using that immediately after a comma is not allowed?

B is clearly right

I'm trying to understand why is A wrong.
we can eliminate A stating which points to malabar coast.

But Which can refer to the entire statement or clause right ??

(There are more than forty newspapers published in the cities of Kerala), which reflects the fact that Keralans are by far India's most literate citizens.

HI Vikas

Your point is correct. THAT is used without comma. But here in this sentence if you see "a state...coast" is a modifier which is placed to modify kerala.

If you remove this modifier, you also remove the comma's along with it and then ur left with no comma. But here D is wrong because THAT bcz it refers to Kerala instead of the mentioned number.
